Among Tuesday night's midterm elections came another race for the city of Jamestown to fill the city council's Ward 2 seat for the remainder of late councilman Tony Dolce's term.
Democrat Jason Sample was officially elected to serve the residents of Ward 2 for the remainder of the term.
Following Dolce's passing in July, Republican Bryan Bigelow was appointed to fill the seat for the remainder of the year. Sample received 620 votes while Bryan Bigelow received 512 votes in last night's race. Sample thanked both the voters of Ward 2 for putting their faith in him to represent them on the City Council, and the Jamestown Democratic Committee for choosing him as their candidate.
"During this campaign, I visited every neighborhood and street in the ward, meeting residents and listening to their concerns," Sample said. "It was a lot of time and effort, but well worth it. I intend to bring that same energy and commitment to the work ahead, remaining accessible, listening, and helping residents address the issues that affect their daily lives. I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to serving everyone in Ward 2, whether or not they voted for me."
Sample also thanked Bigelow for not only running a positive campaign but also his service over the past few months representing Ward 2. In the time he has been in office, Sample said Bigelow has been responsive to residents and "has done a fine job carrying forward the high standard of constituent service set by our late councilman, Tony Dolce."
"I look forward to working with all members of the City Council, the mayor, our city employees, and all of our stakeholders," Sample said. "Jamestown has its share of challenges, but I believe we can make progress by working together. That will be my approach when I take office in January."
Bigelow will continue to serve until December 31.
"I would like to congratulate Mr. Sample on his victory as councilman in Ward 2," Bigelow said. "I feel we both ran a clean campaign and wish him nothing but success. The city is certainly facing its share of challenges and hope that we are able to maintain the services that the citizens need and address the challenges we both spoke of during our campaign successfully. Jason is a good man and I hope that Jamestown is returned to the Pearl City it once was."
Bigelow added that in his time on the City Council he has met many new, wonderful people, learned more about what it takes to govern the city and developed a passion for public service. Over the next few weeks he plans on talking with his family about what is next and focus on the work coming up for the City Council in the next few weeks as well.
"We as a current City Council have a lot of work to do in the upcoming few weeks and I’m going to focus on that work and hopefully the citizens of Jamestown will be in a better position once it's finalized," Bigelow said.
