St. Luke’s to host Día de los Muertos celebration

St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Jamestown is set to host a traditional Mexican and Central American holiday.

The church, located at 410 N Main St, will host a Día de los Muertos Celebration on Monday, November 2, at 6 p.m. in the church’s Undercroft. The event is free to the public, but a $5 to $10 donation per person would help offset program costs.

Día de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and parts of Central America from late October through November 2 that honors the lives and memories of loved ones who have passed away. St. Luke's event is cultural and educational, and it’s open to everyone, according to organizers, regardless of background or tradition. Children and families are welcome to attend. No prior knowledge of Día de los Muertos is necessary to participate.

"Remembering those who are no longer with us is a universal experience that connects us all, regardless of where we come from, our religious practices, the languages we speak, or how far we may be from the places we call home. Día de los Muertos offers an opportunity to honor that shared grief in community with one another, while also celebrating our loved ones, both present and past, by embracing memories and joyful connection," said Momina Di Blasio, New Neighbors Coalition director at St. Luke’s.

The program will also feature a hands-on, concha-making activity where participants can learn to make traditional Mexican sweet bread, along with a guided salsa-dancing lesson open to all ages and experience levels. A face painter will also be available, offering designs inspired by Día de los Muertos traditions, said the Rev. Luke Fodor, the rector of St. Luke’s Church.

"This year’s celebration will offer several opportunities for community members to experience and learn about Día de los Muertos traditions together. Guests will be invited to help create a community ofrenda, a traditional altar decorated with photographs, candles, flowers, food, and other meaningful items honoring loved ones who have passed away. Participants are encouraged to bring a small photograph, memento, favorite food or drink, or other item representing someone they would like to remember and contribute to a shared display of remembrance," Fodor said.
