MAYVILLE - A longtime village clerk is getting ready to retire.

During the recent Mayville Village Board meeting, it was announced that John Crandall would be stepping down at the end of the year.

"It will be 18 and a half years when I'm done," Crandall said after the meeting. "I spent 30 years in retail. I worked for Quality Markets for 28 years, a couple of years at Home Depot. I just kind of landed here. It was the best job I ever had."

Crandall's position is appointed. To prepare for the next clerk, the Mayville Village Board has scheduled a public hearing for a local law that would permit certain village officers to reside outside of the village limits.

Should the local law be adopted, it would permit the village clerk, village treasurer, or deputy clerk/treasurer to live outside the village limits. That person must still reside within Chautauqua County.

The hearing will take place Nov. 10 at 6:50 p.m.

Mayor Rick Syper did not indicate any potential appointments. Rather, he said it will be made by the winner of the November election.

Syper is running unopposed on the ballot for the mayor position on the Republican line, however there are others running for the position. Both Trustee Bill Ward and Chautauqua Town Councilman Tom Carlson are seeking the office through write-in campaigns.
