For several years, the James Prendergast Library has hosted an event entitled Haunting at the Library. Pictured is an assembled cast of crew members, board members and volunteers who performed at one of the events in 2023. P-J File Photo.

The James Prendergast Library is set to host its Haunted at the Library program on Oct. 24 at 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

This year’s program is different from previous years, according to Jennifer Champ, assistant library director.

"This year we will have our program in two different rooms, and the theme is centered around a Story Book Tea Party," she said. "We will have several different characters in each room, interacting with program participants and each other. The event will include light desserts, tea, and book and movie trivia."

Champ said the costumed characters will include the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, the Cheshire Cat, Red Riding Hood, the White Rabbit, and other literary characters.

"In keeping with our previous Haunting at the Library events, we're focusing on a family-friendly, affordable, educational event for all," she added. "The weather generally starts getting bad, so this is a way for a family to come to the library and enjoy a fun program."

Past programs featured literary characters such as Dracula, the Headless Horseman, Dorothy and Toto from The Wizard of Oz, and Edgar Allan Poe. In contrast to the upcoming program, previous events allowed participants to explore various rooms throughout the library, each adorned and themed differently, showcasing one or two characters.

"We wanted to change our format up this year," said Champ. "There will still be the highly interactive character play, yet we’re keeping it condensed to two rooms, and we will have just as many characters as before."

The Haunted Library programs also function as a fundraising initiative for the literacy programs offered at the facility located at 509 Cherry St.

"This event helps raise funds and supports our educational programs," said Champ. "It's a fun, low-cost, family-friendly event, and it helps raise awareness of the library and all the programs we offer."

Champ advises people to buy tickets soon, as the library has sold out for this event before.

"This is a popular event. I recommend that people buy their tickets sooner rather than later – we've sold out of this event in the past," Champ said.

Champ mentioned that attendees are encouraged to wear costumes and that an adult must accompany children under 15.
