A local law is up for council vote tonight that would officially establish a new division for the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities, the Digital Infrastructure Division that would connect to the ongoing fiber project.
A public hearing in regards to this local law is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. before tonight's voting session, with the law looking to be voted on and passed following that during the session.
The division, which was brought before city council in September by BPU General Manager Kris Sellstrom, would work the same as the other divisions run by the nine-member BPU board. There are a few different options for the monthly charge for the BPU’s fiber service, with the BPU being the open-access provider. This means they provide the infrastructure and charge the internet service providers a fixed rate per connection. The service providers can currently offer up to four speeds, but in the future Sellstrom told city council they will be able to offer more. There are different price options depending on the server, and Sellstrom added that the providers can provide different services as well.
Following protocol for local laws, the law was read into the record for City Council at the September voting session and will be voted on tonight. Also following that protocol, a local law to abolish the strategic planning and partnerships commission is also set to be read into the record tonight and voted on in November.
Department budget presentations are set to continue tonight before the voting session, with the Department of Public Works, Parks Department, and Department of Development all scheduled to present their budgets to council from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the police training room on the fourth floor of city hall. The voting session will start as normal at 7:30 p.m. in the city council chambers on the second floor.
