CLYMER -- Clymer Central School's elementary students have a lot of upcoming activities planned, focused on behavior incentives and Halloween.

During the Clymer Board of Education's October meeting, Andrea Bryant, director of learning and development, talked a bit about these upcoming activities with the board, beginning with behavior incentives. These behavior incentives, known as Pirate Behavior Incentives, is something that has been happening with seven through 12th grade students and is now being brought to kindergarten through sixth grade as well.

"It's really focusing on being respectful, responsible and safe," Bryant said. "We're about two weeks into it and the kids are so excited to count the coins they are earning from all of their teachers and adults and earning tickets from their own homeroom teacher. I hear often how many coins each classroom has because they want to tell me right away because they can't wait to find out when the next pop up is going to be."

The first pop up for high school students was the day after the meeting, and elementary's was scheduled for the week after with activities focused on sharks. With Halloween coming up, elementary students will also be having a Halloween safety assembly.

"A lot of kids don't really know what an assembly is because they haven't really had an assembly," Bryant said. "The younger kids haven't had an assembly. There's been one since I've been here, going on five years and it was a little chaotic because they'd never done one, so we're going to start having those again."

The Students Against Destructive Decisions is going to be putting on the Halloween safety assembly with the help of Clymer's SRO Officer Crohnin. Safety bags have also been in the works and will be given out to the kids to include items such as reflective bags with tips, safety cards, reflectors, activity books, bookmarks, crayons, activity sheets, reflective bracelets, and sticker reflectors for costumes, with everything sponsored by the sheriff's department and FFA.

The usual Halloween parade is scheduled and will include a pirate skit beforehand, with the potential to include some bus safety tips that day as well. Bryant also briefly discussed an after school skills club that will be starting for the younger kids to help work on reading, phonics and math skills, along with some writing focus activities that have been being worked on with pre-kindergarten students.
