Mary Lundmark of Kennedy is this year's recipient of the $500 scholarship offered annually by the Chautauqua Region Quilt Guild.
Lundmark graduated from Falconer High School in June and is the daughter of Charlie and Stefanie Lundmark. She is active in community service projects, tutoring, and track and field sports, including pole vaulting. Her sewing specialty is hand embroidery, and she shared with members some examples of her work. One was of an embroidered finch; her mother's favorite bird.
Mary learned to sew from her grandmother, who also told her when she had problems with a project "it is okay, give it here, no need to throw a fit." She would then show Mary how to solve the problem so when Mary had the same problem again, she would stay calm and remember "no need to throw a fit."
While she doesn't quilt, she attended a quilt show in Warren and said she was amazed by the quilted projects on display.
Mary plans on attending Jamestown Community College and then the State University at Fredonia majoring in communications and science disorders and ultimately, earning her master's degree in speech pathology. She would like to work with children, in a hospital with stroke patients or with individuals with eating and swallowing disorders.
