PANAMA -- One of the welcome signs in the village of Panama has again been damaged after previously receiving some damage last year.

Panama Village Board members are now deciding whether to repair the sign or replace it. Mayor William Schneider presented two options to the board during their September meeting.

"Todd (Eddy, village trustee), took the sign down to the Chautauqua Sign company," Schneider said. "They've been very good at taking care of our signs and getting them back up to shape without having to repair all of them, because it is costly."

Schneider presented the board with two quotes from Chautauqua Signs, one for repairs and one for complete replacement. Eddy said on the part of the sign that is damaged a piece of metal or aluminum of some sort will have to be placed, but it probably will not be able to be seen from the road. Otherwise it will look about the same besides the repairs in a few places.

"And this is the one that received the most damage from the last time," Schneider said. "So, it's like a cat, it's on its third life right now."

It was agreed to go with repairing the sign again instead of replacing it, to see if something would happen to it again in the next year and if the sign might need to be moved to a new location. This was also due to a small amount set aside in the village budget for sign purposes. It was suggested that down the road more money might need to be put towards signs in the budget or to look into a replacement plan.

It was also noted that the village does not know where the damage to the sign came from at this time, but that it was possible that somebody hit it. A discussion was held about the potential for Boy Scouts members to make new signs, but Schneider said the village has lost their Boy Scouts troop and the kids in the area are now in Mayville.
