FREWSBURG – Frewsburg American Legion Auxiliary Unit 556 met recently with 16 members attending.
Secretary Gwen Funcell read the minutes from June 16. Treasurer Debby Walsh reviewed revenue and expenses for July and August. They will be referred to the audit committee. Chaplain Dee Dee Liden sent a variety of cards to Yvonne Storer, Shannon Neubauer, Karri Bentzoni, Sherry Edwards, Gwen Funcell and family, Larry Bentzoni, Wendy Olson, Verna and Mark Tompkins, Brian Cheney, Randy Sitler, Jen Jackson, Denny Richards, Debbie Haller, and Scot Conklin.
Emma McCreary will begin searching for a local family to receive Christmas gifts from the Auxiliary. The Zion Lutheran church has a large supply of underwear and socks that will be donated to both Frewsburg and Southwestern. One member reported 13 hours volunteering at the food pantry. One cancer screening was reported. Post officials said 100% membership was attained last year. The goal this year is 258. Membership can now include men who are related two degrees by blood to a veteran. One member reported 25 hours of taking care of a veteran. A note from Karen Cummings was read, thanking the auxiliary for all the cards. A thank you card from Olivia Grey was read, thanking the auxiliary for the scholarship.
The raffle for the afghan donated by Theresa Levandoski's mother will be held soon, with the winning ticket drawn on Veteran's Day. Baskets are needed for the raffle on Sept. 26. Volunteers are needed for Halloween. Other events include the tractor parade on Sept. 27, the half-time steak fry on Oct. 4, and the 300 Club party on Nov. 14.
Under Veteran Affairs and Rehabilitation, hours volunteering in helping a veteran with cooking and cleaning will now cover a spouse or grandparents. A $100 donation was given to the gift shop and coffee cart at the Buffalo VA Hospital. A service was held in Fentonville for a veteran whose ashes were discovered when cleaning out his sister's house upon her death.
It was noted that Amy Thompson at the high school and middle school also accepts donations of clothes and toiletries. The next county meeting is Oct. 8 in Forestville. Frewsburg will host the county meeting on April 8, which is a joint meeting with the Sons and Post. The Frewsburg American Legion Auxiliary Unit 556 meets the third Tuesday of every month. All members are encouraged to attend. The next meeting will be on Oct. 20.
