Clymer principal discusses art, science courses

CLYMER – With the upcoming school year approaching, Brianne Fadale, Clymer Central School's building principal, gave an update to the school board during their most recent meeting on some plans for some specific courses for the year with the current changes in staffing.
As far as course scheduling goes, Fadale said that things are being finalized, and they are trying to get students everything they need while also balancing staffing and scheduling constraints in places such as science. Clymer Central School was still looking for someone to fill an open science teacher position.
"We are interviewing tomorrow; some candidates are coming in tomorrow, so we're hopeful that we'll find somebody that is a good fit for us," Fadale said. "Of course, depending on their strengths and experiences, maybe we will shuffle some things around with our staff right now. We just need to figure out what's going to work best so we can meet the needs of our students and play to our strengths."
One potential idea Fadale said if a good fit is not found is to look for a dual enrollment opportunity for Chemistry students. Other options are also being looked at such as the potential for digital learning opportunities, and this includes for art classes and electives as well, as Clymer is also without an art teacher for all grades. The school is partnering with Infinity Performing Arts to help provide some of those art classes.
"We have some artists coming to us from Infinity, which is a really interesting idea," Fadale said. "They're going to be helping us provide instruction with ceramics, our drawing and painting class, mixed media and studio art class. We have two instructors that won't be here every single day but like Monday, Wednesday, Thursday that can cover their periods and then our thought is that you can have a staff person in the room to help manage and supervise and take attendance, supplement the instruction with the kids and also help with the elementary side of the art program."
While the partnership with Infinity is finalized, Fadale said the other pieces involved are still being worked out. The Infinity instructors would also hopefully be able to provide resources to help elementary students receive art classes as well. Jamestown Community College art classes will not be available anymore either.
JCC classes of Calculus and Geometry are planned to be shared with Sherman Central School this year as well, as some students have expressed interest.
"We're going to have them jump in virtually with our kids, so that's a nice, new opportunity that we're sharing with Sherman so we can help them out," Fadale said.
These JCC courses are already available for Clymer students, and are now being extended to Sherman as another opportunity for collaboration between the districts.
