Carroll Town Board members are ready to drill a test well on Ivory Road as the town continues its search for a new town water well.
Board members in August approved a $1 payment to the property owner to give the town access to the land. A hydrologist working with the town on its water project identified the Ivory Road area as a potential area with a safe water supply. Tim Eklund, town water supervisor, said the Ivory Road site was one of two new test well sites in Carroll that had been marked.
Board members were reviewing the recently received Wigren tank report. Burkett said the report will help the board make a decision about the size of a new water tank.
Eklund also discussed recent cyber attacks on water systems in other states. The FBI said in mid-August that water systems in nine states had been targeted by hackers, including more than 30 water systems in Minnesota. The FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and other agencies warned in an advisory in August that Iranian hackers have been targeting water and wastewater systems and the operational controls of other critical infrastructure sectors. Eklund said the water district's electrical engineer, who built all the controls at the town's well houses, said the town's system is protected with a highly encrypted system and is personally monitored by the engineer.
In other business:
– Josh Ostrander, Carroll police chief, told board members that traffic tickets had decreased in the prior month because officers had moved shift times later into the day to deal with curfew violation complaints. Ostrander said no curfew violations had been observed on the later Friday and Saturday night shifts. Ostrander and another Carroll police officer attended a two-day training course at Frewsburg Central School, paid for by the school district, that allows the Carroll officers to serve as instructors to train others to respond to active school shooters and other emergencies. Ostrander is also working on a state grant to continue purchasing items like vehicle cameras, body cameras, police computers and other equipment.
– Carroll's Highway Department completed an emergency repair on a large sink hole at the intersection of Water and Lincoln streets. The sink hole was a large washout caused by a rusted pipe under the road, The department also due out and replaced 468 feet of bad sidewalk on Falconer Street, Frew Run Road and North Pearl Street and built a new snow plow turn around on Gurnsey Hollow Road so plow drivers don't have to go as far into South Valley when plowing.
