SUNY Fredonia celebration of 200 years gets underway

The State University of New York at Fredonia is launching a yearlong Bicentennial celebration commemorating 200 years of higher learning in the village of Fredonia and inviting students, alumni, employees, families, friends and neighbors to help shape the university's next chapter.
The celebration honors an educational legacy that began in 1826 with the founding of the Fredonia Academy, when residents committed their labor, materials and belief in education to create an institution in the heart of the young village. Across two centuries, that mission evolved from a small academy to a state Normal School and teachers' college, and ultimately to the comprehensive university within the State University of New York system that Fredonia is today.
Under the theme "Celebrating Two Centuries of Impact," the 2026-2027 Bicentennial recognizes the continuity of that mission across generations while emphasizing Fredonia's ongoing commitment to access, creativity, discovery and student success. The anniversary will celebrate not only institutional milestones, but also the people whose teaching, learning, artistry, service and leadership have extended Fredonia's influence across western New York, the state, the nation and the world.
"This Bicentennial celebrates far more than an institutional milestone," President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. said. "It honors two centuries of learning, discovery, community partnership, and the many educators, students and alumni who helped shape the region, the state and the nation. As we reflect on this remarkable history, we also look forward to the next century of innovation and impact."
The campus community will mark the official kickoff with two celebrations at the start of the fall semester. Faculty and staff will gather for a Bicentennial toast today, followed by a student birthday celebration on Saturday as part of the Intercultural Center's annual Street Fest.
A lasting visual centerpiece of the Bicentennial is already welcoming visitors in Fenton Hall. An 8-by-43-foot mural created by SUNY Fredonia alumna Erin Ruffino, '19, was formally unveiled Aug. 6. The sweeping work takes visitors on a visual journey from the Fredonia Academy’s beginnings in 1826 to the present through archival images, period typography, campus landmarks and details drawn from student and community life.
"It marks a very special chapter in the history of SUNY Fredonia," President Kolison said at the unveiling. "It honors where we have been while inspiring us to imagine what comes next."
The spirit of shared history will extend beyond campus through "Paint the Town Blue & White," a new community tradition celebrating the longstanding partnership between SUNY Fredonia and the village of Fredonia. Through Oct. 20, area residents and businesses are encouraged to display blue lights and SUNY Fredonia yard signs as a visible expression of community pride.
Free, weather-resistant yard signs are available to Fredonia area residents. Community members may also take part by lighting porches, windows, storefronts and other spaces in blue. Pick up information and additional ways to participate are available through the Bicentennial website.
Another signature event will be the Bicentennial Convocation on Friday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m. in King Concert Hall at Rockefeller Arts Center. Keynote speaker Chris Bashinelli is a National Geographic Explorer, television host and globally recognized storyteller whose work focuses on human connection, happiness, purpose and belonging. The Convocation is free and open to the public with registration.
Throughout the 2026-2027 academic year, the university will host programs that highlight Fredonia's academic heritage, artistic excellence and community connections. Historical walking tours and exhibits, lectures, performances, student activities, alumni and donor gatherings, reunions, community collaborations and other special events will offer many opportunities to experience the campus and participate in the milestone year. New programs will continue to be announced as the celebration unfolds.
The yearlong observance will culminate with a Bicentennial Gala in June 2027, bringing together members of the Fredonia community to celebrate the university's enduring legacy and look ahead to the impact its students, graduates and partners will make in the decades to come.
"For generations, higher learning in Fredonia has opened doors, changed lives and strengthened communities across western New York and beyond," President Kolison said. "We invite alumni, families, friends and regional partners to join us in this milestone celebration as we honor our past and chart our future."
The Bicentennial website, 200.fredonia.edu, is the central destination for the celebration. Visitors can explore Fredonia's 200-year educational journey through historical timelines, archival photographs, share their own stories and reflections, utilize a self-guided walking tour of campus, view upcoming events, discover ways to engage and learn how to support the next generation of Fredonia students. Additional stories, programs, partnership announcements and participation opportunities will be posted throughout the year.
