Westfield youth’s lemonade sales are sweet for shelters

WESTFIELD – A youngster in Westfield is making a difference for area cat and dog shelters.
Five-year-old Andrew Gustafson, who will be entering kindergarten at Westfield Academy & Central Schools, is getting ready to host his second year of holding a lemonade stand to benefit the shelters.
The idea was completely his. At age 4, he wanted to do something to help the animals. He saw other children around town having lemonade stands and so he decided he wanted to try. He raised more than $200 selling homemade “cookies for cats,” “pretzels for pups,” and fresh squeezed lemonade. He also helped with the baking and the lemon squeezing.
Andrew frequently visits the cat shelter -- Westfield Stray Cat Rescue -- and brings books along to read to the cats, and of course gives them plenty of love.
The dog shelter -- Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue -- is a little harder for a little guy like him to visit and interact with the dogs like he does the cats. But he did not want to leave them out of his quest to help the animals.
Andrew loves animals and has two cats and three hermit crabs of his own.
His lemonade stand will be open Saturday, July 25, and he’s hoping to raise even more money than last year. The stand will be located on Union Street in the village.
