Legislature’s July meeting to be held at Jackson Center
The Chautauqua County Legislature will be going on a field trip of sorts.
During the June meeting, lawmakers approved a resolution to move their next monthly meeting from Mayville to the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown.
County Legislature Chairman Pierre Chagnon, R-Ellery, said during a committee meeting that he received a letter from Kristan McMahon, the executive director of the Jackson Center. She asked if the legislature would be willing to hold its July meeting in their building.
Chagnon read the letter to the committee.
“The Robert H. Jackson Center this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary as a national and international non-profit with deep roots in and commitment to Chautauqua County. We actively work to be a strong community partner to Chautauqua County organizations, schools, government and all persons.
“This is also the 80th anniversary of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg where Robert Jackson helped create the international criminal justice system under which the world operates today.
“This year also marks the 85th anniversary of Jackson’s appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court which occurred in July of 1941.
“Education is at the heart of everything we do to encourage all of our communities to engage, educate themselves, and discuss and debate. We do not tell people what to think but we give them access to experts and information to help them understand and kick the tires on why they believe what they believe. Because education was critical to Jackson’s path and success, everything we do is free and open to the public. The center is 100% supported by philanthropy.
We have changed and grown by leaps and bounds over our 25 years. We hope you have joined us recently for a program or an event, but if you have not, you will be delighted by everything the center does.”
Chagnon said during the July meeting, a video will be played that goes over the Jackson Center’s origin.
The legislature unanimously approved the request.
