Sheridan winery fined $1,000 for missed water reports

A winery in the northern end of the county has once again been fined after missing multiple water reports.

During the Chautauqua County Board of Health meeting, it was announced there were 11 Agreements to Settle for public water supply violations.

All businesses cited are on private well water and are required to do various reporting.

Most of the businesses or organizations fined were for one or two reports missing.

Woodbury Vineyards, however, was cited for missing its fifth water report from 2025.

Justin Ortel, dba Woodbury Vineyards, at 3215 S. Roberts Road, in the town of Sheridan was fined $1,000 for failure to submit results of microbiological minimum monitoring requirements for their public water supply for the month of December to the county Health Department.

Jessica Wuerstle with the county Health Department said by signing an Agreement to Settle, an establishment is admitting guilt. If the establishment does not feel they should have been fined, they could appear before a hearing officer.

In the case of Woodbury Vineyards, Wuerstle said they are permitted by the state Agriculture and Markets Division, however the county is required to ensure their public water supply is safe. She has been in contact with the state agency regarding the missed reports.

Woodbury Vineyards has been cited and fined in the past.

In April, it was reported that Woodbury Vineyards requested to go before the hearing officer but did not appear. They were fined $650.

In October, 2023, it was reported that Woodbury Vineyards was fined $2,800 for multiple missed reports.

Wuerstle said if Woodbury has paid its fines in the past. She added that fines for missed samples will continue to go up.
