FREWSBURG – It wasn’t a big turnout as only two district residents attended the 2026-27 budget hearing Thursday presented by Frewsburg Central School District Interim Superintendent Lynda Quick.

The proposed budget stands at $24,291,748, a $698,068 or 2.96 percent increase over the current 2025-26 spending plan. The proposed tax levy or amount to be raised by taxes is $127,397 or a 2 percent increase from the current budget.

“One of the things that we struggle with in Frewsburg is our tax base is heavily residential,” Quick noted. “We don’t have businesses that support our tax base.”

In March, school officials agreed to eliminate about 8.5 positions to help balance the budget.

The eliminations are an assistant principal position, one full-time cleaner position, two special education teachers through attrition, one secondary math teacher through attrition, three full-time teacher aide positions, and one part-time secretary.

Quick previously said that people are leaving and the district will not be replacing the special education teachers. Due to retirement, the district will not replace one FTE secondary math teacher, those classes will be shifted to be taught by another teacher.

On May 19 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. the budget vote and board member election will take place, and on May 21 the school board will meet in the library at 5:30 p.m.

District voters also will see on the ballot a bus purchase proposition and capital reserve fund proposition.

For the bus purchase, the district wants to purchase two diesel-powered buses at a maximum of $400,000. Quick said the district will receive 90 percent state aid on all bus purchases.

The capital reserve fund proposition is on the ballot so voters can establish the fund, not the funding of it.

“Funds from this reserve will be used to cover the local share of future approved capital projects,” Quick said. “We always need to have a capital reserve fund set up in anticipation of those upcoming capital projects. So voters are the only ones that can set up the capital reserve fund.”

If district voters have questions about the budget, they can call 716-569-7041 or email lquick@frewsburgcsd.org or jleeyaw@frewsburgcsd.org.

Starting at $3.50/week.
