The Chautauqua Region Community Foundation has approved a grant from the Fund for the Region to support the Chautauqua County Humane Society’s $7 million capital campaign, an ambitious effort to expand and renovate its existing animal shelter to better serve animals and the community.

The “Building Our Future” campaign will add significant square footage to the current facility, creating space to accommodate 29 dogs, nine stray holding areas, 48 cats, 10 flexible holding cages, and a new isolation area for dogs.

“Our donors and fund advisors include many animal welfare supporters,” said Tory Irgang, Chautauqua Region Community Foundation executive director. “This grant aligns with our community’s needs and the interests of so many who support the Foundation.”

The project also ensures the facility meets and exceeds evolving New York state animal shelter regulations, including updated standards for space, ventilation, and separation requirements. The improvements are essential to maintaining safe, humane conditions for animals in care and position the Humane Society to continue delivering services while remaining fully compliant with state guidelines.

The Humane Society’s leadership scaled the design to focus on essential needs, resulting in a practical, mission-centered expansion that strengthens core operations while remaining fiscally responsible.

“This project is about making sure we can continue to meet the needs of animals and our community — not just today, but for years to come. Every decision in this plan reflects that responsibility,” said Jane Babinsky, Chautauqua County Humane Society executive director.
