A Message To District Residents, Taxpayers From Dr. Kevin Whitaker

Dear Jamestown Community,
This has been another incredible school year, and we are so grateful for the opportunity to share the stories of our students, staff, and schools with the community through our “Focus on Schools” page in The Post-Journal. We extend our sincere thanks to our partners at The Post-Journal — especially editors John D’Agostino and John Whittaker, along with publisher Michael Bird — for helping us connect with our stakeholders throughout the year and as we share important information about the proposed 2026-27 budget.
In October, Jamestown High School had the privilege of welcoming New York State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa for a tour of our aviation lab and a roundtable with student leaders. Listening to our students glow as they spoke about their experiences, opportunities, and future plans was a powerful reminder of why we do this work — and how grateful we are for our community’s continued passion and support for our schools.
We hope this page captures those moments and our gratitude — the work of our students, the commitment of our staff, and the impact of a community that continues to show up for our schools. Thank you for always showing up.
As we look ahead, our focus remains clear: continuing to provide meaningful opportunities that support the whole child — academically, socially, and emotionally.

The proposed 2026-27 budget reflects that commitment. With a total projected budget of $120,898,274, the plan maintains a 0% increase to the tax levy while making strategic investments in our students and programs.
This includes:
Expanding classroom support through the addition of teaching positions at Persell and Washington middle schools
Strengthening arts programming with two new middle school strings positions, a music/marching band teacher, and an additional art teacher at Jamestown High School
Continuing to invest in special education and student support services, including occupational and physical therapy, and expanded integrated classroom supports

Maintaining a strong focus on safety and security through ongoing equipment replacement, infrastructure improvements, and increased staffing support
Supporting the continued growth of the Innovation Center at Rogers School with the addition of an assistant principal and a secretary
In addition to the proposed budget, voters will consider propositions related to the sale of the Harrison Street property to the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities and a library tax increase (more information can be found at prendergastlibrary.org). Three Board of Education seats for three year terms will also be on the ballot.
Our schools are strong because of the community that surrounds them. Your support, your voice, and your commitment to our students make all the difference. I encourage you to take time to review this page, celebrate these accomplishments, and participate in the upcoming vote on May 19.
Thank you for your support,

Dr. Kevin Whitaker & the JPS Board of Education
