BESS, Brooks on planners’ agenda
The Fredonia Planning Board has important items on its agenda Wednesday. A site plan review of a proposed Battery Energy Storage System, and approval of an amended site plan for Brooks Memorial Hospital, are on tap.
The Planning Board meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the second floor boardroom of Village Hall. Public comment will be taken at the meeting, according to the legal notice announcing it.
The BESS would be at 343 Central Ave. “It’s small. They tell me it’s the size of a generator,” said Charles LaBarbera, Fredonia’s top building officer.
The Middlesex Apartments at the site are being remodeled into high-end rental units. LaBarbera said the electrical grid would have a problem supplying the power needs of the wealthy tenants, without a small BESS at the site. He said National Grid requested the BESS.
The BESS would be surrounded by a 6-foot-high wooden fence and shielded by landscaping, LaBarbera said. He called it “not intrusive.”
The Fredonia Zoning Board of Appeals has the final say on the BESS, because it needs a variance. That board meets next in the second week of May, LaBarbera said.
As for the Brooks hospital item, LaBarbera called it “crossing our ‘T’s, dotting our ‘i’s.” He said “some things have moved around a bit, not a big deal.”
Ground work on the project is well underway. The site on East Main Street, a former grape farm, was recently fenced off and a gravel driveway was added to help move in heavy equipment.
