WRFA Sets 80s Dance Party Fundraiser Saturday

It’s a chance to don your best 80s garb, get out your hairspray, and dance the night away.

WRFA, 107.9 FM is holding a fundraiser March 28, from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Reg Lenna Media Arts Studio, 116 W. Third St.

“It will be a night of celebrating music from the decade as well as community radio here in Chautauqua County,” said WRFA General Manager Anthony Merchant.

Merchant added that besides him, other disc jockeys James Fiorella, and Steve Trapani will be spinning songs from the decade of excess.

Merchant said the idea for the dance party was originally thought up by Andy Melendez who hosts Da Platform on WRFA.

“We were having a discussion on fundraisers for the radio station and one of his ideas was an 80s dance party,” Merchant said. “It sounded fun when he first mentioned it, but as I started running the idea by more people, it became especially clear this was something we should do. I was looking to do an event for the station in the first half of 2026 and I couldn’t have asked for better timing than Andy bringing his idea of the dance party when he did. I can confidently say this is the first dance party WRFA has ever thrown.”

Do you remember the decade of excess?

Full disclosure – I sure do.

The neon colors, the leg warmers, the power suits, the big hair, the yuppies (young urban professionals) – they all had their place in the 80s.

In my opinion there were three separate music eras in the 80s – beginning, middle and end. The beginning, 1980-1983, was very slick and pop oriented. The middle, 1984-1986, very diverse where New Wave met rock and pop. Some songs were laden with synthesizers and processed vocals while other songs were bare. The end, 1987-1989 ushered in big hair bands who played heavy metal in a poppy, slick sort of way. The gimmick worked until it met its demise in the 1990s – grunge.

I love 80s music, and I have it as a preset on my Sirius XM radio.

Merchant said patrons should expect a mix of all genres and eras of music from the 80s.

“Attendees are strongly encouraged to dress in their 80s best for a chance to win two tickets to WRFA’s Great American Picnic at Southern Tier Brewing Company on Aug. 16. The audience will vote on who wins best 80s outfit,” Merchant said.

The general manager added that the dance party is an all-ages event. Alcohol is available for purchase to patrons over 21. For ticket information, visit reglenna.com or contact Merchant at amerchant@reglenna.com or call (716) 664 2465 ext. 209.

Starting at $3.50/week.
