WESTFIELD – A new police chief in the village has been announced.

The Village of Westfield and Westfield Police Department has announced the appointment of Erik Karlstrom as the new chief of police.

Village officials noted Karlstrom brings a proven record of military and law enforcement leadership to the position.

A village resident since returning from a combat deployment in 2013, Karlstrom enlisted in the United States Army National Guard at the age of 17 and served for 11 years, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 2012, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, serving under NATO command with the International Security Assistance Force.

“His military service instilled the values of discipline, accountability, and leading from the front that continue to guide his leadership today,” officials stated in a news release.

Following his military service, Karlstrom pursued a career in law enforcement, graduating from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Academy 2015. He went on to serve as both a Police Officer and Deputy Sheriff, dedicating his career to protecting and serving his local community. Throughout his tenure, he advanced from patrol operations to School Resource Officer, and later to Sergeant of the Navigation Division, where he oversaw multiple operational units and specialized enforcement initiatives.

Karlstrom previously served as a part-time officer with the Westfield Police Department from 2015 to 2017. In 2023, he returned in a part-time capacity to assist the department during a critical time of need, demonstrating his continued commitment to the village and its residents.

“Chief Erik Karlstrom’s leadership philosophy reflects the values instilled through both military and law enforcement service; discipline, responsibility, teamwork, and leading from the front. He is committed to strengthening officer development, enhancing operational effectiveness, and maintaining transparency with the community,” officials stated.

Village officials expressed confidence in Karlstrom’s experience, dedication, and long-standing connection to the department and community.

Karlstrom thanked the village for the opportunity to head the department. “It is a tremendous honor to serve the Village of Westfield as Chief of Police. My commitment is to lead with integrity, set high professional standards, and ensure our department remains focused on service, accountability, and community partnership. Westfield is a strong community, a beautiful place to live, and I look forward to working alongside our officers and residents to continue building trust and ensuring public safety. Thank you for having the trust and faith in my leadership,” he said.

Karlstrom takes over after Greg Wozneak resigned in December following six months as the police chief.

Before Wozneak, Rob Genthner had served as chief from 2007-2025.

Starting at $3.50/week.
