When it comes to holiday decorations, sometimes people enjoy going big.

On Monday, members of the City Council’s Housing Committee discussed those who go a bit too big for some people’s liking. A potential ordinance that would regulate the size of decorations in someone’s yard in the city was broached during the meeting.

At the full council work session, Councilwoman Hannah Jaroszynski, D-Ward 5 and chair of the Housing Committee, reported on what was discussed to the full council.

“We did have a general discussion about a possible change in ordinance to somehow regulate oversized or seasonal decorations, such as 30 foot skeletons in people’s front lawns,” Jaroszynski said.

Nothing is being done for certain at this time, but Jaroszynski said she had received a complaint about it earlier in the day, so it was brought up for general discussion. She added that city development director Crystal Surdyk has done some research into what other municipalities around the country do in regards to that, and came up with some potential options if it ever comes to that point. Surdyk also updated the committee on a few other ongoing things in the city for the Department of Development.

“Crystal also gave an update on the house on Second Street whose roof peeled off like a banana and what that’s looking like, and she also just mentioned that it’s Annual Action Plan time for the DOD and they’re hoping for community involvement this year,” Jaroszynski said. “They’re going to get creative with different ways to reach out, so we’re excited to see what they do.”
