After recently enduring a 70 mile historical journey across Italy, the Youth from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church were able to gain a wealth of knowledge and lessons from the challenges along the trip.
With this incredible journey now behind them, the youth were given time after a recent Sunday Service to present photos and stories of the experience, highlighting some of the aspects of the journey to Rome that touched them most.
The youths reflection took place following the 10 a.m. service Sunday in the church’s undercroft. The first to take the stand was Eve Ludwig. Ludwig discussed how, as time continued, the beauty of the trip began to further inspire the group. Ludwig discussed various challenges that hindered the group along the way, such as the strong downpours throughout the first day. Yet despite these challenges, Ludwig noted that it was all worth it in the end when the weather would clear up and the group was able to see the beauty of the trip. Ludwig described the gorgeous fields that the group was walking through in the later days. During this time, Ludwig stated that she wished aloud that the group could see sheep in the fields, before spotting a herd at the very next field. Even though there were numerous hardships that made the journey difficult at times, the connection to the natural scenery seemed to continuously motivate Ludwig.
Sydney Conti had a particularly unique experience during this trip, receiving an outdoor baptism from St. Luke’s Rev. Luke Fodor during the trip. Though Conti was not able to be present for the presentations, a video of the baptism was shown with a statement about the journey from Conti being read. Conti noted feeling and incredible connection to faith throughout the trip, giving time to reflect on faith and this connection. Not only did this seem to grow Conti’s spiritual connection, but also gave a furthered connection to the natural surroundings throughout the trip.
“I also love that my baptism was outside, and right next to a waterfall. That was really neat,” said Conti. “I feel like getting baptized symbolized a new beginning for me. It was a moment of commitment, reflection, and gratitude. I will be forever thankful for that opportunity.”

Another youth that found a furthered connection to nature and God throughout the trip was Gavin Anderson. Anderson stated that not only did this journey deepen these connections, but it also unlocked more strength to push through challenging scenarios. Anderson said he was also in awe at the beauty of the churches that the group visited, specifically having mentioned a mosaic at St. Paul’s. Anderson stated that this immense beauty gave such a strong feeling of the presence of God, and a sense of peace for the group that had endured so many challenges up until that point.
Kieran Fodor discussed the group’s trip into the catacombs. Fodor stated that the catacombs offered a very unique insight, allowing the group to see connections with the spiritual feeling and take a look into the past through the art and symbolism present. Fodor discussed the paintings that were present in the catacombs, which were a bit part of giving a glimpse into the faith of those who were laid to rest there.
Another youth that felt a deep connection to the churches and services that the group visited was Zarchary Pickett, who seemed to find similarities and connections to the faith and worship practices at home. Pickett specifically spoke of the group’s trip to the first non-Roman Catholic church in Rome. Pickett stated that, despite being so far away, much of the service was similar to the typical services at home, finding connection in the similarities that worth has worldwide.
Eden Ludwig would present last, having noted the incredible relationship and connection that was built between the group throughout such a trip. Ludwig stated that, though the group continued to battle through harsh conditions on the journey, the sense of connection built with one another helped to keep positive spirits and motivated everyone to keep pushing.
“One of the most powerful aspects from the pilgrimage was the connections that we formed. From navigating through carved paths, and when Luke says two more miles but it’s really four,” said Ludwig. “After I finished walking, we were all just relieved and so happy that we got through it together that you can see the genuine smiles on our faces.”
