Carroll Officials Raise Town Hall Concerns
The Carroll Town Hall building, located at 5 West Main Street.
FREWSBURG – At the recent town board meeting on Feb. 11, officials discussed concerns that are had about the current Town Hall building. Though very easy in the discussion process, officials have already begun looking into the possibility of conducting multiple building renovations, or even looking into a new location.
Supervisor Tim Burkett discussed the reasons behind the growing concerns for the town officials, with a large emphasis on how the building is already causing problems for smooth operations.
Burkett stated that there are not only too few rooms for the number of necessary office spaces, but that the building is just not spacious enough in general for the town’s operations to be conducted. Burkett stated that the entirety of the upstairs is also unable to be utilized, as the building does not have an elevator that goes to these floors. This means that the town cannot use these spaces since they are not handicap accessible.
At this time, Burkett has made contact with an architect about the matter. This architect would be able to engineer the best possible plan for the Town Hall project, whether that includes plans for a building or changes. Before the architect can begin this work though, there is the requirement of a $2,500 retainer fee that must be paid.
Additionally, Burkett has located the original site plans for the building, which has a comprehensive view of the layout, utilities, and property as a whole. While the building was initially built in 1932, plans were also drawn up in 1941, which included a fallout shelter in the basement of the building. While the town building and property committee is currently looking into various publicly owned lands to see if these are necessary to keep at this time, Burkett noted that there is not enough information for a decision to be made. As a result, the town officials tabled the discussion for the next meeting in March.
