Southwestern Central School board members are being asked to approve a mural designed by a student.
During the board’s Feb. 10 meeting, board members heard a presentation from Adriana Bango, a high school student who has planned the mural project. Bango has already discussed the idea with the assistant principal of Frewsburg Central School because Frewsburg’s school has many murals that students have made, allowing administrators to help guide Bango through the process. Bango noted that the process is independent for the student designer, who is responsible for producing the concept and deciding on the location. After this, the art teacher must first give approval before the school board has a final saw.
Bango said what gave much of the inspiration for the creation of this project is wanting to visually show memories and how they change with age. With Bango now in her final year of high school, and working hard on a sustained investigation for AP Art, this seemed like a fitting final project to commemorate the love for the district.
“I have made many pieces studying the brain, my inner child, and navigating emotions in different stages of my life,” said Bango. “Since my art has continually followed the idea of my own memories and how they have impacted me, I thought that for my final piece it would be fitting to show how shared memories impact the entire community, specifically through high school and how it impacted us.”
Bango also noted how more expressive artwork and murals throughout the school will only continue to inspire students’ creative minds. Bango said murals can act as pathways to different creative thoughts, even helping many to better unleash artistic creativity. The murals are also beneficial to visual learning, as Bango also pointed out. This is because many children will develop more awareness and visual identification, all of which can be furthered through art.
With the board having heard the necessary materials for the project from Bango, the only remaining portion is waiting for the full approval to allow the mural to begin.
