An investigation is continuing into a Monday fire that damaged a vacant residence at 836 Prendergast Ave.

According to Jamestown Fire Department officials, crews arrived on scene at about 6:30 a.m. to find flames on the first floor, and smoke pushing throughout the building.

Firefighters connected a hose to a nearby hydrant, and forced entry into the building. While a crew, officials said, worked on the first floor fire, other firefighters performed a primary search which was negative. Due to a large hole in the floor between the first and second floor, the fire had spread to the second floor.

Firefighters attempted to make access to the second floor with a hose, but because of high heat conditions, all crews were evacuated from the building. After a quick knockdown of the fire from the outside, firefighters re-entered the structure to attack the first and second floors at the same time, containing much of the flames. Crews continued to move throughout the residence to attack the attic where a ventilation hole was cut to release heat and smoke from the building.

Off-duty firefighters also were called in to help extinguish the blaze. Crews returned to the station at about 11:09 a.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
