Sensory Sensitive Santa Coming To Fenton

The Fenton History Museum and Research Center will be welcoming Santa Claus soon as part of a yearly program to give children a more relaxed opportunity to see him.

This event will offer a sensory sensitive experience for children that may be facing some sort of challenges, and will give them a comfortable environment to build a life-long memories.

The sensory sensitive Santa experience came about in 2018 under former Director Noah Goodwill, according to Executive Director Joni Blackman. Blackman stated that under Goodwill, Dennis Robbins and others worked to create an event that would allow for a less overwhelming experience compared to that of other Santa locations in the area. Since then, Blackman has taken over and continued operations. Additionally, Robbins has continued to financially fund the event each year, due to his strong passion for ensuring this opportunity remains available to children with special needs, said Blackman.

During the event, Blackman said that the center is prepared to ensure a smooth and peaceful experience. Employees ensure that lights are not bright, that there is no music, and even set up coloring books and simple toys to give kids some entertainment. Blackman stated that the children and families are initially asked to wait in the dining room area, before being escorted to the restored drawing one-by-one. This is where Santa will be waiting to see the children. This system ensures that there are no distractions while the children are actually meeting with Santa, and keeps the environment comfortable and orderly, according to Blackman.

“The lights are low and there is no noise, and it seems to work quite well,” said Blackman. “Families come from Buffalo, and below the Pennsylvania line, and locals come every year.”

Blackman noted that the event has gained an incredible reach, and drawn in people from hours away who wish for their child to see Santa in a comfortable space. Blackman also noted that the organization reaches out to any groups within the area that work with special needs children, in an attempt to make the event known to as many who could benefit from it as possible.

The event is not only free to anyone that wishes to attend, but also requires no RSVP in advance. Blackman noted that anyone is welcome, and heavily encouraged, to show up. Blackman stated that any child that attends will be allowed to leave with a special goodie bag, and also a choice of candy if the parents will allow.

“Even if it is just one child that comes, and experiences a good experience, it’s well worth it,” said Blackman. “We serve the whole community, and if we can help, like I said, even one child experience Santa Claus in a positive way, we’re happy to do that.”

The event will be held at the Fenton History Center on Saturday, Dec. 13, from 4 to 6 p.m. Special accommodations can be requested by the organization in advance. For more information contact 716-664-6256.
