Portage Inn Amphitheater Project Starts In March
Construction of the amphitheater is scheduled to begin in March in Westfield.
WESTFIELD — The village is moving forward with an exciting new public project that will transform a historic downtown property into a vibrant community gathering space. Plans are underway to create an outdoor terraced amphitheater and park at the site of the former Portage Inn on North Portage Street.
“This project represents a key step in transforming one of our village’s historic sites into a vibrant gathering place for residents and visitors alike,” said Don McCord, Executive Director of the Westfield Development Corp. “The new Portage Inn Amphitheater will create new opportunities for arts and culture while giving our residents and visitors a beautiful place to gather, celebrate, and share experiences. It’s a wonderful way to honor our history while creating new memories for the future.”
The revitalized open space will enhance Westfield’s downtown district and provide opportunities for music, entertainment, and community events throughout the year. The project is partially funded through the Environmental Protection Fund Grant Program, administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP), with a grant award of $450,040, Grant number EPF 230141.
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is providing the remaining $131,514 in matching funds, fully covering all construction costs.
The amphitheater will occupy the site of the former Portage Inn — a three-story hotel and restaurant that opened in 1908 following the renovation of the H.L. Kent Paper Warehouse. For more than eight decades, the Portage Inn served as a beloved local landmark before closing in 1999.
After years of disrepair and safety concerns, the Village Board approved its demolition in December 2015. The property, now owned by the Village, also includes a memorial park honoring first responders.
Earlier this year, a request for proposals was issued to develop the final site plan. Larson Design Group was selected to provide the final design, and the environmental review process has been completed and approved.
The next phase of the project includes finalizing the design and putting the construction contract out to bid this winter. Construction is expected to begin as early as March, with a potential opening by July, just in time for the summer season.
In addition to the current grant funding, the Village is pursuing New York Forward Grant support to add a covered stage area, enhancing the venue’s versatility for year-round programming.
Once complete, the Portage Inn Amphitheater will serve as a hub for live entertainment, lectures, and community gatherings — an inviting new destination for both residents and visitors. The project is being administered by the Westfield Public Works Department, led by Andrew Thompson.
