At the November meeting of the Chautauqua County Legislature, County Executive Paul M. Wendel, Jr. and Legislator Daniel W. Pavlock (District 14) presented a formal Letter of Commendation recognizing the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department for an extraordinary milestone — its 100th anniversary of service to the community.

The commendation highlighted the long and proud history of the department, which traces its origins back to October 23, 1925, when 24 local residents gathered at the Grange Hall to form what would become the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department. Just one week later, on October 30, 1925, the newly formed fire committee voted to purchase its first piece of fire apparatus: a Dodge-chassis truck from the Buffalo Fire Appliance Company. M.H. Terry, John Murray, and A.S. Gray were appointed as the department’s first fire commissioners.

Since those early days, the department has grown, evolved, and remained a steadfast protector of the Ellington community. For a full century, its firefighters have bravely responded to emergencies of every kind — protecting lives, safeguarding property, and providing critical support during times of crisis.

Beyond emergency response, the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department has served as a cornerstone of community life. Generations of volunteers have helped sustain beloved local traditions, including the annual chicken barbecue and the November turkey party raffle, both of which continue to bring neighbors together in support of their fire company.

Today, the department boasts a roster of 75 members, including six state-certified basic EMTs and 30 actively responding volunteers.

In presenting the commendation, Chautauqua County leaders expressed deep gratitude for the department’s century of exemplary service. Wendel and Pavlock encouraged all residents to join in celebrating the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department’s outstanding contributions and honoring the volunteers — past and present — who have kept their community safe for the last 100 years.
