Presenting The Past: Celebrations of Winter Exhibit Opens At Fenton

This year’s 47th annual holiday exhibit at the Fenton History Center, Celebrations of Winter, highlights the snow related clothing and winter activities of Jamestown’s past and present.

Featured artifacts are fur outerwear, sleds, skates and skis from years past.

The four-story Civil War era mansion is filled with decorated trees from the mid 1800s, the Victorian era through the 20th century. One of the favorite trees is the upside-down tree in Mrs. Fenton’s sewing room. The Swedish Heritage room has one of the oldest Swedish Juskrona in the eastern United States. The exhibit also teaches about the holiday in the Italian community as well as Hannukah, Los Posados, Three Kings and Kwanzaa. The favorite aluminum Christmas trees are featured in the tower.

Many elementary classrooms have booked holiday tours of the exhibit. Joni Blackman, Fenton History Center executive director, curated the exhibit.

“The exhibit meets a number of the New York state social studies curriculum standards for the elementary grades,” Blackman said. “Kwanzaa, Hanukah and the celebration of the Three Kings are part of the exhibit. It is a fun field trip for the classes. They seem to really enjoy the size of the Mansion and the beauty of the exhibits. Trained docents lead the educational tours.”

A Christmas village display is pictured as part of the Celebrations of Winter exhibit at the Fenton History Center.
