‘Real Team Effort’: Randolph Elementary Students To Perform The Lion King KIDS Friday, Saturday
RANDOLPH — The African savanna will be springing to life in the Randolph Jr./Sr. High School auditorium.
Gail N. Chapman Elementary students are preparing for the opening night of Disney’s “The Lion King KIDS.” The production will run for two performances on Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m.
The musical follows the adventures of young Simba (Luke Hood), a lion prince destined to rule the Pride Lands after his father, Mufasa (Oliver Shields). As he journeys from Pride Rock to the jungle and back again, adult Simba (Grayson Woodfield) finds his rightful place in the “Circle of Life.” Other classic songs from the animated film and Broadway musical include “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King,” “He Lives in You,” and “Hakuna Matata.”
Alongside Simba, the cast features Maya Greene as young Nala, Isabell Brown as adult Nala, Madelyn Foster as the villainous Scar, Nora Dauphin and Lily Milford as the comedic duo Timon and Pumbaa, and Annelise Austin as Zazu.
The production has involved significant collaboration among the school community according to Kathleen O’Mara, the show’s director and an elementary music teacher at Randolph Central Schools. O’Mara is joined by Assistant Director Corinne Dauphin and Cast Manager Katie Dallas, with set design by Peter Dauphin and Brigit Giambrone.
“We have 107 kids in the cast, ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade,” O’Mara said. “High schoolers are helping out, and we’ve got parents who built the sets. It’s been a real team effort, and a lot of work has gone into it.”
According to the directing team, the show emphasizes the importance of individuals remaining true to who they are. There are also themes of responsibility, family, and friendship that audience members can learn from.
“We thought the kids would respond well to it,” O’Mara said. “They’ve just gone above and beyond our expectations. They’re really into it, and all the different groups — the hyenas, the elephants, the giraffes — they’ve really embraced their characters.”
The Gail N. Chapman Elementary School invites the community to attend the performance. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and are available at the door. The production is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.
