A Dunkirk native, who serves as commander of the American Legion of New York state, participated in the largest veterans parade in the nation.
John R. Miga led the New York Legion contingency in the Veterans Day gala event that marched on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on Nov. 11. Dressed in his ceremonial Commanders Uniform, Miga was out in front of dozens of legionnaires representing the staff and members of the Department of New York.
“It was a chilly overcast day, but it was important to be out there to provide a visual to our veterans around the state that the legion is active and waiting for all who should join us,” Miga said.
He also referred to the signs on the Legion float bringing awareness to the “Be the One” campaign that serves to ebb the number of veterans suicides each year.
It was reported that there were 20,000 participants gathered at the hours-long event. Approximately 400,000 line the street to view the parade.
Miga, a life member of Dunkirk Memorial Post 62, Miga has served as commander of his Post, Chautauqua County American Legion, and the Department of New York’s Eighth District. On the national level, he has been a member of the Americanism Council.
His community involvement includes Northern Chautauqua Kiwanis Club (president and board member); Little League coach; Junior Bowling coach; board member of various social clubs; and 25-plus-year blood donor.
