A potential catastrophe was narrowly avoided Wednesday morning, as a cargo train collided with a tractor trailer in the town of Dunkirk.
A New York State Police trooper at the scene stated no substantial injuries were sustained during the crash.
A train struck the vehicle at Chadwick Drive and Progress Drive around 7:32 a.m. Wednesday. The tractor trailer appeared to be pushed roughly 200 yards from the railroad crossing, where it came to a rest off the side of the road alongside the tracks. The site is across from Stericycle and Dunkirk Metal Products, just beyond Purina.
Sheridan Fire/Rescue responded to the scene with both a fire truck and an ambulance. Three troopers with New York State Police also responded, with several other departments contacted for mutual aid. The ambulance left the scene without a patient, and a tow truck arrived at 8:30 a.m.
