The musical is based off of the Spongebob Squarepants show by Stephen Hillenburg and had the book for the musical written by Kyle Jarrow in 2017. The musical will also contain original songs from artists including Yolanda Adams, Stephen Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sarah Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, and T.I. In addition to this already impressive list of artists, songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny, and Andy Paley will also be included.

In the show Spongebob, and his friends, learn that an underwater volcano is soon to destroy all of the homes in Bikini Bottom. At the same time, Plankton and his wife Karen devise a plan to hypnotize Bikini Bottom Residents into liking chum, disguising the plan in the midst of the chaos. When it seems as though the community has given up hope, Spongebob must use the power of optimism to save the town, and convince everyone else to do so as well.

Organizers of the event hope that this production will grow a love for involvement in theater for the community, especially for youth. Aubrey Russell, President of the Lucille Ball Little Theater, said the importance of the choice behind this particular show. Spongebob is a multigenerational franchise that allows for interest in theater to appeal to a younger audience, said Russell. Russell stated that continuing to include production materials that are child friendly is essential to the longevity of the theater.

This is due to the need for the involvement of future generations, especially in a time when support for theater productions is decreasing across the country, according to Russell.

Russell noted the volunteer work as being a huge part of what made this production possible. Volunteer workers come from a host of different professions and ages in the community, said Russell. Doctors, lawyers, blue collar workers, and marketing managers are all among the volunteers that the theater has seen, according to Russell.

Starting at $3.50/week.
