Pet Expo Has Plan To Keep Animals Safe
Dogs and cats don’t always get along – but organizers of the Chautauqua County Humane Society’s Pet Expo ’25 have a plan to make sure the two play nicely.
With so many dogs visiting the expo, Amanda Sublett, Chautauqua County Humane Society community outreach and education coordinator, said the Humane Society is working to ensure everyone is safe.
“We have staff and volunteers on site to help as needed,” Sublett said. “People that have been trained to watch dogs for behavior cues and know how to properly intervene if necessary and now how to help anyone in need with questions and concerns should they arise.”
Sublett said that Faith Small of Faith in Paws plays a key role as well.
“Faith will be available to help with any attending dogs that become overly stressed and anxious. Anyone is welcome to visit her table for extra assistance. We have a space set aside so people can work with Faith in a calm and quiet environment,” Sublett said.
Small describes the nature of her work through her business, Faith in Paws.
“I am an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and an AKC Evaluator. I began Faith in Paws with the goal of creating strong, confident, and loving bonds between owners and their dogs. I aim to achieve a healthy relationship with obedience by using positive reinforcement methods whether it’s teaching the basics, or curbing reactivity,” Small said.
Small says there are signs to look for to read a dog’s comfort level.
“Recognizing stress signals is the first step. Common signs include drooling, pacing, panting, reluctance to walk, or a tucked tail. If your dog shows signs of stress, step outside and let them take a break. Another option is to visit the Faith in Paws booth where a “cool down” private room will be available for dogs in need. I encourage anyone with behavior concerns to find my booth so that I can provide guidance based on what behaviors the dog is displaying,” she said.
