Jackson Center Hosting Constitution Day Speaker

The Robert H. Jackson Center will be inviting students to its annual Constitution Day celebration Friday, Sept. 19, from 10 to 11 a.m.

The event extends invitations to all within the community including students, educators, or just those who are interested in holding a better understanding of democratic processes, all for no cost to attendees thanks to the generous donations and sponsors for the event.

The event will contain guest speaker Lindsey Cormack, who serves as an assistant professor of political science and director of the diplomacy lab at Stevens Institute of Technology. Cormack has also created, and continued to maintain, a database that compiles all electronic congressional newsletters, for convenient public access, which can be visited at dcinbox.com. Additionally, Cormack has authored two books, Congress and U.S. Veterans: From the GI Bill to the VA Crisis and How To Raise a Citizen (And Why It’s Up To You To Do It), with the latter being a significant point of what is to be discussed at the upcoming event.

The focus of this event will be on the evolving engagement and discourse within politics, as well focusing on what responsibilities or actions must be taken to ensure a properly engaged and influential public. Cormack’s background in research centers largely around political communication and participation, a large focus of her previously mentioned book, allowing her to give meaningful insight towards the problems existing within political discourse and civil engagement.

Since receiving her PhD from New York University, Cormack has contributed a host of research toward educational publications and political reports, as well as sharing findings on a host of blogs, newspapers, podcasts, and media outlets.

Relevant publicized works includes “How Congress Communicates” by Niskanen Center, “How to Get Your Lawmakers to Listen” by ProPublica, “Election stress disorder: How to cope with the anxiety as political tensions intensify” by NBC News, along with a host of contributions toward educational textbooks. This knowledge that Cormack is to speak on will not only attempt to better political engagement and discourse for adults, but also for children who are headed into an incredibly polarized political atmosphere which they must soon know how to navigate.
