ASHVILLE – The Harmony Historical Society will be hosting its annual Living History Fair on Saturday.

The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will focus on showcasing the generational craftsmanship that helped to create the town. Jill Phillips will be one of these craftsmen in attendance, where she will be showcasing her talents in basket weaving. Phillips will be in attendance through Basket Plus, with her goal being to show the historical importance of baskets, and the art of making them, in households around the town in the 1800s.

Charles Elliott, of the organization TaleWeavers, will also be at the fair to show off his skills. Elliott will be showcasing his skills in chair caning, a major source of industry, which was once brought from London around the end of the 17th century. The Johnson family will also be in attendance showing off their generationally passed-down apple pressing techniques and homemade press. This will not only give an insight to the creation processes of the past but also creates fresh and fully natural apple juice.

Ski-Line Farm animals will be giving a new contribution this year as well, with the introduction of farm animals to the fair. This will include baby cows, chicken, and pigs all of which are great fun for the children and will offer the unique opportunity to learn more about these animals. These will not be the only animals present though, as the Chautauqua County Beekeepers Association will be there to detail the honey-making process, an important piece of the area’s history following the invention of portable beehives in 1851 according to the historical society.

The event will also include wagon rides, leather making demonstrations, historical tours, food vendors, and so much more. For more information on the event, or to see what activities are scheduled to be in attendance, visit the historical society facebook page at facebook.com/HarmonyHistoricalSociety.

Starting at $3.50/week.
