Fredonia Vote On Water Sharing Today

Today is Fredonia’s long-awaited water decision day.

The Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote on a project to build a new water storage tank in conjunction with the town of Pomfret, along with associated distribution piping and pressure reducing valves. The resolution also mentions “decommissioning and demolition of the village’s existing water treatment plant.”

The resolution states that the proposed interconnections “will benefit both municipalities and will enable purchase of water by the village of Fresonia from the North Chautauqua County Water District and the parties have entered into an inter-municipal agreement.”

The estimated project cost is $17.5 million, according to the resolution.

Today’s meeting is at 6 p.m. in the Fredonia Opera House. Trustees moved the meeting from their normal, rather cramped Village Hall meeting room in anticipation of a large crowd.

Another resolution on the agenda authorizes $17.5 million in bonds to pay for the project. If approved by trustees, the bonding would be subject to permissive referendum — in other words, residents of the village would vote on whether to allow it.

There’s two other water-related resolutions before trustees today. One enacts a negative declaration (meaning no adverse effects are anticipated) on a State Environmental Quality Review of the project.

The other authorizes Mayor Michael Ferguson to execute an intermunicipal agreement with Pomfret “to explore and further negotiate shared use, expense, operation, and maintenance of a shared water storage tank and associated pumping facilities.”

The full resolutions are available on the Fredonia village website. Click the “Meetings” tab on the top of the main page, and the resolutions are in a link on the page that loads.

It will be a busy day for the Board of Trustees, as it also has a workshop scheduled for 9 a.m. in the regular meeting room.

Starting at $3.50/week.
