Firefighters Extinguish Two Saturday Fires

One person was taken to UPMC Chautauqua after a stove top fire in Apartment 302 of the Jamestown Housing Authority building, 110 W. Third St., Jamestown, on Saturday.

Firefighters responded to a box alarm in the building at 11:24 a.m. and found heavy smoke in Apartment 305. A fire was located on the top of the stove top that had extended to the kitchen cabinets. The fire was extinguished using a water can extinguisher. Engine 5 crews were assisted by Engine 4 crews and Ladder 1 crews for ventilation. The apartment’s occupant was taken to UPMC Chautauqua by the Jamestown Fire Department ambulance and treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause was found to be accidental. Engine 3, Engine 4 and Ladder 1 all delayed due to multiple calls at the same time, according to an incident report, though functional smoke detectors and the fire alarm system alerted firefighters immediately and helped reduce damage from the fire. Crews returned to quarters at 12:53 p.m.

Firefighters also responded to 311 Superior Street after fire was reported in the basement at 7:23 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters reported smoke showing from the front side of the building. The home owner reported everyone was out of the building. Firefighters used a hand line and entered the home through a side door that led to the basement, while a hose was also connected to a nearby hydrant. The fire was contained to the basement and was put out within about 15 minutes. Crews also conducted overhaul, checked for extension and ventilated smoke from the building.

An off-shift crew was called for along with fire investigators. A cat was rescued from the residence and treated at the scene with oxygen.
