Two members of the Frewsburg Fire Company have been formally commended for their extraordinary bravery and quick action during a structure fire that occurred in the early morning hours of July 7.

At 5:06 a.m., the Frewsburg Fire Company was dispatched to a fire at 50 Water Street. Before emergency crews could arrive, firefighters Rick Carlson and John Munson — both residents who live across the street from the property — were already on scene.

While Mr. Munson’s wife relayed critical information to 911, Munson, a former fire chief, provided real-time updates to the dispatcher about the severity of the blaze. This timely and accurate communication prompted an immediate second alarm, ensuring that additional resources were dispatched quickly.

In the midst of the unfolding emergency, Carlson and Munson bravely approached the burning structure and successfully assisted a resident out of the home, moving him across the street to safety where he could receive medical attention. The two men stayed with the victim, offering comfort and reassurance until emergency medical personnel arrived.

Chief Charles Piazza of the Frewsburg Fire Company has since praised their actions, stating his firm belief that without their swift response, the outcome could have been a tragic fatality.

Recognizing their courage, Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel, Jr. and County Legislator Dalton J. Anthony, R-Frewsburg presented Carlson and Munson with a Letter of Commendation at last week’s Legislature Meeting. The letter highlighted their extraordinary bravery, selflessness, and profound commitment to the well-being of their fellow citizens.

“Their courage and compassion reflect the highest ideals of community service and stand as a shining example of what it means to be a neighbor, a citizen, and a hero,” said Wendel.

Starting at $3.50/week.
