After a member of the public approached the City Council’s Public Works Committee with a concern, the City Council is discussing adding sign and dog waste bag dispensers near the former Rogers Elementary School.
Councilman Randy Daversa, R-At Large and chair of the Public Works Committee, said during a recent council work session that County Legislator Tom Nelson, D-Jamestown, brought a question about putting up signs as reminders to the committee during their meeting earlier that night, specifically in the area near Rogers Elementary School.
“He says he walks his dog there almost every day and makes a point of cleaning it up himself,” Daversa said. “Unfortunately, not everyone does the same and he thinks that signage could be a helpful reminder.”
Nelson also asked the committee about a dog waste dispenser similar to the one near the Allen Park Bandshell. Daversa said considering all of the soccer games and other events that bring families to the area by the school, Nelson would appreciate something there to help with the situation.
“We generally don’t put them up on trafficked streets,” Daversa said. “Parks are normally where you find waste bags and signs, so we will look into that some more.”
Council President Tony Dolce said that sometimes schools have them and that area would be school property, so he wondered if it would be possible to reach out to the school about getting a dispenser or signs. He added that a lot of schools use these areas for football and soccer and all kinds of things and that they are basically parks too, so it might be worth touching base with the school about the idea.
