Dog Impoundment Fee, Vehicle Noise Ordinances On Council Agenda

Two amendments to two different ordinances in the city’s laws are set to be looked at during the city council’s voting session on Monday.

The first ordinance focuses on dogs, specifically on raising fees for impoundment of dogs. According to the agenda for Monday, there has been an increase in the city of people skipping their court hearings for abandoned dogs and leaving them in the care of the city while waiting on court dates for that. It also notes that people are unable to be served with a summons to seize their dogs if they cannot be located, and the rise in the cost of dog food is also leading to an increase in the impoundment fees, due to the city’s increased costs for taking care of them.

Fees for seizure and impoundment of any dog in the city for the first impoundment will increase from $10 to $20, with the second impoundment increasing from $20 to $40 plus $6 a day — increasing from $3 a day — and the third impoundment increasing from $30 to $60 plus $6 per day — also an increase from $3 a day. An additional part of this amendment states that any dog impounded and left in the care of the city whose owner does not appear or make contact with the court within 45 days will be seen to have abandoned the animal and the dog will be placed up for adoption.

The second ordinance is the city’s noise ordinance which is looking to add an amendment focused on car noise specifically. The agenda says that chronic vehicle noise has become a problem in the city and it is often the same offenders causing noise violations.

The amendment to this ordinance says that on the third violation of a car stereo or similar noise maker from a vehicle, a city police officer may tow and impound the vehicle as a public nuisance at full cost to the owner.

Both ordinance amendments will take effect immediately after the city council vote. The voting session is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday in the second floor city council chambers.

Starting at $3.50/week.
