FALCONER – The Falconer Central School District (FCSD) has actively addressed the challenge of summer learning loss by implementing an educational program designed to be both enjoyable and enriching. This initiative aims to foster student engagement and enhance academic retention over the summer months.
For the third year in a row Falconer is running its Summer Boost program for students who will be in first through eighth grades. Summer Boost provides engaging classes that enable students to improve their learning, gain new skills, and broaden their knowledge in an enjoyable and laid-back environment.
“We have about 100 students in our Summer Boost program,” said Holly Hannon, the principal of the Paul B. D. Temple Elementary School (UPK- grade 2). “The kids can pick between three classes, and we’ve partnered with the Jamestown Area YMCA to provide lunches for our students.”
Additionally, many participants in the program have discovered particular classes that truly captivate their interest, eagerly anticipating each session with enthusiasm and excitement.
“Sewing is my favorite class,” said Kaylee Parmentier, a fifth-grade student at Harvey C. Fenner Elementary School. “We’re making a few projects, like making a teddy bear and a bag.”

However, fellow program participants and student Liea Aarons, a second-grade student, said she prefers the Legos class.
“The program aims to equip students with new skills in a safe and enjoyable environment. The classes offered include reading, math, cooking for kids, sewing, Legos, fishing, and more,” Hannon remarked. “Recently, the children caught a fish during Mr. Andy Ohl’s fishing class.”
“The program runs for approximately three weeks from eight-to-11 a.m. and is free of charge,” said Hannon. “As the students leave, the Y provides a take-home lunch for them.”
