FedEx employees from Erie joining Jamestown location
The Jamestown FedEx location is getting some new employees.
During the Chautauqua County Legislature’s Public Facilities Committee meeting, Public Facilities Committee Director Tim Card was discussing a lease agreement at the Chautauqua County-Jamestown Airport for parking lot space with Federal Express.
During the discussion Card said FedEx is adding between 100 and 120 employees there.
The positions are because FedEx is closing a shipping center in Erie, Pa. this month.
According to the Erie Times, the FedEx shipping center on West 17th Street is closing as the company moves ahead with a plan to consolidate operations. The Erie shipping center is one of three being closed in the early months of 2025. The number of employees who worked there was not announced.
In addition to the Erie facility, FedEx has closed a facility in Lexington, Kentucky, and plans to close another in Staten Island, New York, according to a report in Supply Chain Drive.
FedEx Media Relations spokesman David Westrick confirmed the move but didn’t say how many employees are transferring to Jamestown.
“As part of our previously announced network transformation strategy, enhancements are being made and routes added at the Jamestown station on Airport Drive that involve offering positions to team members from a station in Erie that is closing,” he said in an email. “These changes are part of our long-term strategy to streamline and simplify pickups and deliveries while supporting affected employees and providing better service to our customers.”
According to the resolution that was voted on by the legislative committee, FedEx is requesting to lease parking lot space at the Jamestown Airport in the large parking lot in front of the main terminal building for the purpose of employee parking.
Card said FedEx is planning on doing some parking lot work and may construct an additional building at their location on Airport Drive.
Legislator Bob Scudder, R-Jamestown, said he was at the Jamestown airport recently and noticed a lot of activity by FedEx. “I think I counted 37 vehicles. There were big ones, little ones, and they just kept coming,” he said.
The parking lot lease agreement was approved by the committee and will now go to the full legislature for final approval.
