Inaugural SWCS Construction Course Wraps Up With Project

Final project? Build a shed!

Fifteen skilled students in teacher Nick Lundgren’s construction class recently built a shed over seven weeks at Southwestern High School, all while gaining skills during the project.

During the building phases, students learned the basics of framing, roofing and exterior finishes. They got to use many tools including miter saws, circular saws, framing nailers, and many other hand tools commonly used in the construction industry. The construction class also had some assistance from Trojans studying home maintenance at SWHS.

The shed was commissioned by Molly Moore, who begins her role as district superintendent in July 2025. She supplied the materials so the students and Mr. Lundgren could build the structure on campus.

Moore says she and her family are “so impressed” by the work of Southwestern’s students and Mr. Lundgren.

“And we will enjoy our shed even more knowing it was built by our students!” says Moore, who notes it will be hauled to her residence and installed by a shed moving company.

This is the first year SWCS offered a construction course.
