11-Year-Old Dies After Tuesday Accident
An 11-year-old Jamestown youth died at Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo after being hit by a pickup truck at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Jamestown.
Jamestown police officers, members of the Jamestown Fire Department and ALSTAR Ambulance crews responded to the accident on Willard and Kinney streets. Daniel Galarza Ramos, 11, was taken to UPMC Chautauqua by ALSTAR and then flown to Oishei Children’s Hospital.
The accident is being investigated by the Jamestown Police Department, along with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department Accident Reconstruction Team. All parties are cooperating with the investigation, which is ongoing, and no charges have been filed against the driver at this time.
Ramos was a fifth-grader at Jefferson Middle School and previously attended Lincoln Elementary School.
“We are saddened to receive this terrible news and our sincere condolences are with the student’s family and friends,” said Dr. Kevin Whitaker, JPS superintendent. “This is a tragic loss for the family, the Jefferson and Lincoln staff, and for all of us in the Jamestown Public Schools. A student’s passing has a lasting impact on those close to them and our school district stands ready to offer support to students, staff, and families however needed.”
JPS recognizes that this may be a difficult time for our students and staff. Jefferson Middle School’s Crisis Intervention Team, made up of professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel at difficult times such as this, will be made available to those who may need it. Additionally, our counselors are available for any student who may need or want help or any type of assistance surrounding this loss.
“Our Jefferson family is devastated by the loss of this student,” said Jefferson Middle School Principal Katie Zwald. “His presence will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Our sympathy and thoughts are with the student’s family, friends, and loved ones.”
“The Lincoln Staff would like to express our deepest condolences to the family of this student,” said Katie Russo, Principal of Lincoln Elementary School. “We had the privilege and honor of teaching him for six years. He was a bright light with a sparkly personality and the staff at Lincoln will miss him tremendously.”
