WESTFIELD — This weekend features a celebration that not many can say they witnessed. For the Simpson family, this weekend is for them.

Mildred Simpson celebrates her 100th birthday on Saturday with her family in Westfield.

Mildred Griswold Simpson was born on May 10, 1925, in the town of Arkwright. She was the youngest of five girls born to Myron and Eva Griswold. She grew up on the family farm on Griswold Road in Arkwright.

She attended and graduated from Morrisville college in 1945 with a degree in culinary arts. She married James A. Simpson, III, in 1949 and moved to Westfield. She has called Westfield home ever since.

Mildred and James Simpson had two children — a son, James, and a daughter, Lorrie. Mildred raised her children as a dedicated housewife who instilled a strong work ethic in her children. She also has four great grandchildren.

The Simpsons ran a grape farm for many years. Simpson also took on gardening with vegetables, flowers and herbs. The Simpsons often sold their produce and baked goods at local farmers markets.

She is a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Westfield. She also loves to travel and spend time with her family, like she will this weekend.

Family members include James and Debra Simpson; Al and Lorrie Hall; Can, Wendy, Hannah and Cole Tenamore; and James, Lindsay, Aiden and Liam Simpson.
