Scholarly Score: Conner Dean Wins Stanley A. Weeks Braw Caddie Clan Award for Excellence

From left are Miles and Grady Moore of Southwestern High School, Conner Dean of Jamestown High School and Daniel Peterson and Landon Frederes of Frewsburg Central School. Dean is being honored with the Stanley A. Weeks Braw Caddie Clan (BCC) Award for Excellence.
Conner Dean, son of Marc and Joanne Dean, received the Stanley A. Weeks Braw Caddie Clan (BCC) Award for Excellence.
The $2,000 scholarship recognizes JHS scholar-athletes who are well-rounded, hardworking, and volunteer in the community. The award ceremony will be held at Moonbrook Country Club on Thursday, June 12, at 5 pm; family, friends, and coaches are welcome to attend.
The swim coaches at New York University recruited Dean, and he will study architecture, combining interests in math and science with conceiving and designing buildings.
“Thanks to my friends, teammates, coaches, and teachers. Most importantly, thanks to my family and NYU coaches for guidance,” Dean wrote.
Dean graduated fourth at JHS, received the Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award, and is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. He served as president of the Key Club and member of the National Honor Society, volunteered for soccer and several JHS activities, bell ringing for the Salvation Army, and assisted his grandparents.
“Conner is an exceptional young man who demonstrates character and high moral integrity,” wrote Rachel Anderson, Key Club advisor, in her recommendation letter.
The National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association recognized Conner as an All-American for the 200 Individual Medley (IM, 1:48.79) and three JHS relay teams. The individual medley requires technique, speed, endurance, stamina, and mental fortitude across the butterfly, back, breast, and freestyle.
As swim team captain, Conner led the team to an undefeated season and the team’s (Falconer, Frewsburg, Jamestown, and Southwestern) state title. He was a state champion in the 200 IM and joined three state record relays–the 200 Medley and the 200 and 400 Freestyle relays (with Frederes, Peterson, Moore, and Moore). Conner holds 7 Jamestown High School records, eight CCAC records and four Section 6 records. Conner and the relay team hold numerous Western New York pool records.
Members of the Braw Caddie Clan across the country, Chautauqua Region Community Foundation officials, the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame, and Jamestown High School teachers, coaches and administrators play roles in the scholarship process. Seven local Braw Caddie Clan members and five former Braw Caddie Clan scholarship winners – Andrew Pumford, Ben Cecchini, Jonathan Healy, Luke Kindberg, and Zachary Eklum – served on the scholarship selection committee.
This year’s scholarship is the 20th scholarship the Braw Caddie Clan has awarded. One way to support the fund is to donate to the Stanley A.
