The Jamestown Farmer’s Market is planning for its annual opening day at the beginning of June, once again set to be in collaboration with Jamestown Pride for a special opening day event.
A special events permit for the Farmer’s Market was discussed at the most recent City Council work session, coming first before the city’s Public Safety Committee. The Farmer’s Market is set to be held every Saturday from June 7 to Nov. 22, on Third Street between Main Street and Cherry Street, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On June 7 the special Pride market will extend up Main Street from Third to Fourth Street. The market is planned to extend until 4 p.m. on that day.
“The Pride is extending down Third, all the way to Pine this year,” said Nick Weith with the Farmer’s Market who was in attendance at the work session. “Last year I think it was just from Third to Fourth. So, making an L and then the normal set up for the Farmer’s Market a T.”
Weith added that the market plans on shifting to an hour earlier than in the past, making it 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. instead of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The council asked if there will be food trucks at the market, which Weith said there would be, and they briefly discussed how food trucks for special events near restaurants work.
“So, a special event food truck is covered under the event permit,” said Crystal Surdyk, city development director. “So it’s not the same rules that apply for a special event.”
Councilman Jeff Russell, R-At large and chair of the Public Safety Committee, reiterated this point, saying that because of the special event the food trucks are allowed to be nearer to restaurants. Surdyk added that the trucks have to be within the approved area of the event itself.
“We get phone calls on that every year from some of the restaurants, ‘Why is there a food truck out in front of my restaurant?'” Russell said.
It was noted that the normal limit for a food truck that is not parked outside for a special event is 150 feet from the door of a restaurant.
Weith said one of the food vendors that they are considering a food truck is A Slice of Home, the newest pizza place that recently opened in Jamestown on North Main Street. Weith said they will be running and selling pizza from their store.
The special event permit was approved by the Public Safety Committee.
