Chautauqua Institution Names Interim Chief Executive

Chautauqua Institution has named Kyle Keogh as its interim chief executive starting June 1.

Keogh will step in after the departure of Michael Hill, who will serve as Chautauqua Institution’s president until June 1. He is leaving the institution to take a position as president at Randolph-Macon College.

Keogh, according to a letter posted on the Chautauqua Institution website by Candace Maxwell, institution board president, has visited the grounds every summer since he was five years old. He has served on the institution’s board from 2015 to 2023 and been a member of the Chautauqua Hotel Company Board since 2015. Keogh, his wife Liz, their children Brendan, Bridget, and Daley, along with his sister Maura Shafer and brother Sean, all consider Chautauqua home, according to Maxwell’s letter.

Keogh will work with Chautauqua Institution staff, the institution’s board and Financial Sustainability Working Group to ensure a strong and vibrant 2025 Summer Assembly while also helping prepare Chautauqua for its next chapter. He will also collaborate with Laurie Branch, who will succeed Maxwell as the institution’s board chair in October.

“I’m honored to return to Chautauqua in this role and to work alongside such a talented and committed team,” Keogh said. “Like so many others, I care deeply about this Institution and its future. We have an opportunity to build on Chautauqua’s powerful legacy and ensure it thrives for generations to come.”

Keogh comes with a background in strategy, finance and technology. He serves as chief business officer at Cover Genius, a venture-backed tech company, where he helped grow revenue while improving profitability. He previously spent 16 years in senior leadership roles at Google, launching new products, leading teams and helping Google grow. He has also held leadership roles at IBM, McKinsey & Co., and J.P. Morgan & Co. He holds degrees from Hamilton College and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, is a Chartered Financial Analyst, and teaches as an adjunct professor at NYU’s Stern School of Business.

“We are confident that Kyle’s leadership, experience, and love for Chautauqua make him exceptionally well-suited to guide the Institution during this important period,” Maxwell said in her letter to the Chautauqua Institution community.

The institution’s Presidential Search Committee will be actively engaging the community and developing a clear set of criteria to guide the selection of Chautauqua’s next long-term leader.

Starting at $3.50/week.
